[SMF] Fix potential null pointer dereference (#1324) 
* [SMF] Fix potential null pointer dereference

Pointer "sess" was first dereferenced and later on checked for nullness.
This is clearly wrong. Rearrange the code path to make sure the check is
done first, then dereferenced.
