Created a new section called "Working With Libraries". This
section is a parent section for all the stuff about libraries.
Previously, there were two other sections dealing with libraries:
one was mulitlib section and one was about loading static
libraries. It makes sense to have a parent section now that
gathers the three sub-sections together. I have reorganized the
chapter structure to accomplish this.
Also, I placed some IRC chat notes temporarily into the new
section that will discuss how to load multiple versions of the
same library in parallel on the system.

Added a new bullet as a tip for best practices that addresses
how we address bug 3071 and 3274. We are suggesting they enable
a PR Service if they are using continually incrementing PR values
when package feeds are published or used.

Several changes to make sure that the default toolchain directory
(opt/poky) is understood as the default. I changed some wordings
to call it out as the default. Some examples I left alone as they
used /opt/poky but I clearly indicated that the example was using
the default installation directory.
I also updated the note in the manual that talks about alternatively
building the toolchain installer. Previously, it mentioned two
methods. I have added the third and most significant method that
uses bitbake image -c populate_sdk. This method creates a toolchain
installer that contains the matching sysroot.

The poky-db-pdf.xsl file has code that controls the font color
for the headers, footers, and separating lines for each when
the PDF version of a manual is made. I changed the values
from #cccccc to #999999 to darken these up so they can be
seen a little better.

This commit adds the three *.customization.xsl files. I
(Scott Rifenbark). Split the commit because after applying the
18 patches, the list of stuff to stage was huge and I did not
want to add them one-by-one. So I staged them using git add -u.

some toolchain recipes such as gcc-cross-initial,

The section that describes an efficient way to set up the
build system to look in local areas for tarballs needed updated
so that PREMIRRORS was not the focus. The example used does
not even employ PREMIRRORS. So I changed wording to support
the example. I also added a mention of the PREMIRRORS variable
and a linked reference to it for more information.

Two things fixed:
1. A couple examples for setting up a layer.conf file were
using the meta-yocto configuration file as an example.
Turns out this is a bad example because the BBPATH variable
is appended to the LAYERDIR when setting BBPATH rather
than the other way around. That is because meta-yocto
is a distro layer. BSP layers, however, are not distro
layers and are the norm here. So I switched up the way
BBPATH was set and actually called out meta-yocto-bsp
config file as a template.
2. Added a link for the BBPATH variable in the
FILESYSTEM_PERMS_TABLES variable description in the
glossary. Just happened to notice this so I fixed it

The chunk.quietly option disables the output of the docbook
chunker. Creation of a new html file is now longer printed to the
console. This provides a much cleaner output of the eclipse makefile
target.

When calling the eclipse target twice without calling clean in between
the figures folder was copied as a subfolder of the existing figures
folder. This patch fixes the copy command to correctly copy the
figures folder.

The script tools/eclipse-help.sed is used to convert links that
point to other documentation parts. This avoids having to leave
the eclipse help center when clicking these links.

The file is used when creating eclipse help html files. It processes
all html files and converts links so that the user can navigate
between different docuementation parts without leaving the eclipse
help center.

Eclipse help documents are now created when calling the 'make all'
target on the yocto-project-qs. Resulting files are archived into
the tarball as well. When calling 'make clean' artefacts of
the eclipse documentation build are deleted.

The fake title section is converted into a docbook
article.articleinfo. If used with a custom title page this will lead
to the excapt same output. But I will enable the creation of metadata
from this title information.

The quick start guide is currently not using a title information to
set the title of the document (e.g. article.title or
article.articleinfo.title).
As other output formats may use the title information to create
metadata this information has to be added to the document. To preserve
current style of the document a custom title page has to be used. With
this for instance 'article.title' can be used instead of the
fake-title section currently used, leaving the style intact.

parameters simplifies the Makefile.
Furthermore supporting new output formats can now be achieved by
creating a new customization file containing its corresponding
parameters. Parameters that are used across different stylesheets with
different values will then be separated through different
customization files.
Global parameters can still be set through the XSLTOPTS variable since
this precedes the parameters in the customization file.

The title of a pdf document is part of the image used on the title
page. Thus the title defined (e.g. bookinfo.title) in a document
should never be used when creating title pages for pdf documents. As
other output formats may use the title information to create metadata
the title has been removed from the template.

The "-dirty" String section from the old YP Kernel Architecture
and Use Manual was moved to section 2.3 of the manual. It needs
to find the right area to be put in (AR for Darren). I added the
AR text to the top of the section so it would not fall through
the cracks.

A Section about seeing what has changed in a kernel tree
was moved from the old YP Kernel Architecture and Use Manual
to this new manual. The section moved was "Change Inspection:
Changes/Commits". In addition to moving the sections, I
shortened them up by removing verbose parts of the section.

New appendix required adding the kernel-dev-maint-appx.xml
file. The contents are sections 3.2 and 3.3 from the old
YP Kernel Architecture and Use Manual, which is "Tree
Construction" and "Build Strategy." According to Darren Hart,
this information should be retained for the few people on
the planet that might ever need it. In addition to adding
the new file, I had to add the bits to the kernel-dev.xml
manual to support including the appendix when making the
manual.

Moved the "Kernel Architecture" section from the YP Kernel
Architecture and Use Manual to this manual. The section
included the kernel-architecture-overview.png figure. So,
I added that PNG file to the "figures" folder. Finally, I
had to also add the PNG file to the Makefile tarfile list
for kernel-dev. Note that because the figure was part of
the old YP Kernel Architecture and Use Manual, I did not have
to add the figure to the mega-manual tarfile list.

right at the beginning of the manual in the form of an AR for
Darren. This will eventually be removed, but for now it is there

I went through and got rid of all references to the old
YP Kernel Architecture and Use Manual and replaced with
appropriate references to the new YP Linux Kernel
Development Manual.
I also laced in appropriate references into various sections
of the new YP Profiling and Tracing Manual.
Also, updated the list of resource manuals to reflect the
new manual set (addition of kernel-dev and profile-dev and
removal of kernel-manual).

Added four chapters to the directory. I based these chapters off
of an existing YP manual. I also updated the .gitignore file
so that it will support ingnoring profile-manual make operations.

layer being created. The manual does not particularly call

The sections for "Machine Branches" and "Feature Branches" really
should be encapsulated within a section on branching. Much of
the text in the "Machine Branches" section presents the rationale
behind both types of branches. I have created a larger section
to contain these and will edit the text to fit.

Three instances of *.scc files were recursively including themselves.
These .scc files needed to have their names changed to a file
that indicated hardware support only.

I added in the variable YOCTO_DOCS_KERNEL_DEV_URL as a placeholder
for the variable used to resolve to the published manual. This
will need changed when we decide how to retire the existing
kernel-manual.

These changes were to the intro chapter to introduce the DocBook
form, the Makefile to introduce the new manual, the figure used
for the title had to be updated, the root manual .XML file needed
changed, and the style sheet.
The manual now makes with just the raw text for Darren's intro
section.

The STAMPS directory is now structured as
build/tmp/stamps/$MULTIMACH_TARGET_SYS/<extended_PN>/$PV.
There were three areas in the manual that needed adjusting

Fixes [YOCTO #3176]
Several places throughout the YP manual set examples are given
for the bblayer.conf file. For release 1.3, a bug existed that
surfaced when a user removed either the meta or meta-yocto
layer from this configuration file. The bug has been fixed and
the ripple effect through the YP documentation set affected
several manuals.
Fixes include updating the code samples that show bblayer.conf
so that they now include the BBLAYERS_NON_REMOVABLE variable,
a new glossary entry for the variable, and an explanation of
both BBLAYER and BBLAYER_NON_REMOVABLE in the section that
talks about the bblayer.conf file.

Clean operation should also remove the *.tgz file. I added
code so that if the user makes the file and specifies the
'clean' target, the generated tarfile is removed.

White space at the end of a line in the DocBook .XML files
presents a problem for certain Git commands. It evidently
shows the white space as red-highlighted errors. I have removed
the white space from this concepts chapter.
Also, fixed one grammar item.

The poky.ent file has variables to list the essential host
development system packages required to build a headless
system. The OpenSUSE distro requires python-xml. I also
inserted some carriage returns and line continuation characters
in the strings for all the distros so that they are formatted
better in the resulting manuals.

and SDKMACHINE variables. These needed to be pointed out
to the user as important variables for correct settings
before generating the toolchain.
I added a new section for the autotools-based programs that
now includes a simple "Hello World" example. This section
precedes the section that describes how to pass host options
to configure.sh.

system and throws an error when sourcing the environment
setup script. I added key notes in several areas of the doc

Added variable descriptions for BB_DISKMON_DIRS and
BB_DISKMON_WARNINTERVAL. These went in the reference
manual in the glossary section. First draft for both
descriptions.
Also, updated the Makefile to include two new figures used
in the Build History section. The figures needed to be added
to the TARFILE variable so that the .PNG files are included
when publishing both the poky-ref-manual and the mega-manual.
Added two figures to the figures directories of the poky-ref-manual
and the mega-manual. These figures are part of the new Build
History section. Anytime you add a figure to any manual you
also have to store it in the figures directory of the mega-manual.

Feedback from Paul Eggleton suggested to not use the linked
term "Source Directory" in the last paragraph of this section.
Reasoning being that it is mis-leading in this case. People
reading this will be thinking more along the lines of traditional
source code rather than our establishe "Source Directory" term,
which in the doc set refers to either the unpacked poky tarball
or the cloned poky Git repository.

Adjust the descriptions so that it is clearer that these are specific
to a machine and should appear in the machine's .conf file, and are
intended to affect the image contents, not the dependencies of a
specific package. Also change the examples so that they demonstrate more
realistic usage scenarios for these variables.

The kernel workflow section was re-written to reflect that the
kernel appendix has been removed. Also, changes to the flow in
general no longer make reference to the bare clone and the copy
of the bare clone as a method used to modify the kernel.

The figure that shows the bare clone and the copy of the bare
clone are no longer needed. The description for the kernel
workflow has been reduced to discussing only modification of
the temporary source files. We are no longer talking about
creating a bare clone and copying it as a way to modify the
kernel in this manual. That topic will be described elsewhere.

menuconfig in the kerenl example appendix. The information is
now merged into the similar section in Chapter 4 "Common
Tasks." It was decided that the Appendix A examples in the
manual were too detailed for a general development guide.

Each time the kernel revision is bumped (e.g. 3.2 to 3.4)
Some of the figures would be out of date. The reason is they
had pathnames that included the release of the kernel.
For previous YP releases I was adding logic to the Makefile
to be sure to catch the right files dependent on the branch
from which the documents were being built. This scheme is
not scalable so I decided to make the figures generic by
adding a note within the figures explaining the place-holder
"<x.x>" as part of a pathname. Thus, three new figures were
added to the folders directories of the dev-manual and the
mega-manual. Correspondingly, the 'denzil' version of the
figures were deleted.
I modified the Makefile so that if the BRANCH is not edison
or denzil then the generic figure set is used. I have to retain
the logic for both edison and denzil to cover the case where
a user clones or sets up an edison or denzil repo and then
builds out the manuals. Basically, it had to be backwards
compatible for releases prior to danny.

Danny, the "kernel-example-repo-<release>.png" file changed to
"kernel-example-repo-danny.png". To correctly make the dev-manual
and the mega-manual some things needed to change:
1. New figure created and added to both the dev-manual and the
mega-manuals figures directory.
2. The "kernel-example-repo-denzil.png" files from the dev-manual
and mega-manual figures directory was removed.
3. The Makefile was adjusted so a new BRANCH=danny area now exists
to set TARFILES for both dev-manual and mega-manual.

Removing the Appendix A (BSP) example had some rippling affects
throughout the doc set. There were several links into the appendix.
All these links had to either be modified (if possible) or simply

This section now points into the BSP Guide where it talks
about using the yocto-bsp script to create a BSP. The prior
method was by hand and described in an appendix (A) of the
YP Development Manual.

Reorganization of the packages section in the YP Quick Start.
These are now ordered still by distro but the listed packages
have been culled down to just the needed ones to run an
image on QEMU with graphical support.
A corresponding section in the reference manual now provides
the comprehensive list of packages for all supported distros.
The section in the reference manual is broken down by
distro and by function.
Finally, four new variables were introduced to track the
essential packages for each of the distros. The variables
are defined in poky.ent and follow the form
<distro>_HOST_PACKAGES_ESSENTIAL. This will make it so
we don't have to maintain this list of essential packages
in multiple places.

* Explain that we test with a set of reference hardware rather than only
supporting hardware that we have (avoiding any implication that the
build system can't support other devices). These are in the
faq entry in the poky-ref-manual for the question of how we can
claim Poky / OpenEmbedded-Core is stable.
* Adjust the language so that it is OE-Core friendly, with a link to
the Development Manual for the definition of OE-Core.

P* variables extensively to refer to names of the recipes. The
wording used was antiquated and exclusively referred to
"Packages." I changed to reflect the fact that P* variables

Turns out the .sh file that installs the tarball comes down without
executable permissions. I added a sentence in each manual instructing
the user to set the permissions to the script before attempting to
run it.

Section A.5.2.3 "Changing recipes-kernel" indicated that the user
needed to look in poky/meta-yocto/recipes-kernel/linux to find
the linux-yocto_3.2.bbappend file to locate correct SRCREV
values. With 3.1, the team split out kernel and BSP stuff
even further by creating a poky/meta-yocto-bsp directory.
The example needs to reference that directory instead.

I changed the example that builds an image so that it uses the
default build directory. It seems like the natural thing to do.
Also added a new poky.ent variable named OE_INIT_FILE. This
variable is set to the name of the build environment script

For 1.3 there is not longer a toolchain tarball. Instead, there
is a wrapper script that lets you install the tarball. This
fundamental usage model change caused several ripples throughout
the documentation set. I have changed wordings and examples
to reflect the new paradigm.

plug-in from the latest source. Small changes to be more complete

List frameworks we provide that are likely to be used by people these
days - Pimlico has been removed and GuPNP and Matchbox don't really
belong. Also slightly modify the sentence following so that it is clear
that these are optional.
In addition to Paul's patch, I cleaned up one of his sentences with
some simple grammar edits.

* core-image-core was renamed to core-image-x11 and the editor and file
manager were removed.
* core-image-basic's description has been updated to reflect its
intended purpose
* core-image-lsb is intended to be standalone - should not be
associated with core-image-basic.
* The Pimlico applications have been removed so they are no longer
present in the Sato images.
In addition to Paul's patch, I removed the "etc." word. This word
is better replaced by "and so forth". Also, consistent with the
YP documentation.

name was a hold over from when the book had appendices that were

Task has been renamed to package group, and there are some minor changes
in how package group recipes should be constructed - in particular the
inherit of packagegroup.bbclass is now highly recommended as it will set
appropriate defaults and automatically add complementary -dev and -dbg
packages.
In addition to Paul's patch, I added a couple <filename>/</filename>
tags around some switch names to be consistent with manual
formatting.

Robert P. J. Day pointed out a link in the development manual that
was for the BitBake User Manual. The link resolved to an old,
non-maintained version of BitBake documentation. According to
Richard Purdie, the BitBake docs referenced should be the ones
that ship in the bitbake/doc/manual directory of poky. The
YP docs had been using a variable named BITBAKE_DOCS_URL that
also resolved to the antiquated user manual site. Consequently,
there were many links that needed fixed across both the YP
Development Manual and the YP Reference Manual. Each of these
references now points in general to the bitbake/doc/manual
directory in poky for more information.

This new directory contains the files for the mega-manual HTML
document. Mega-manual is a compilation of all the existing YP
manuals and guides. It is a single HTML file that simply lists
each individual HTML document for the existing YP manuals and
guides. The figures directory contains all the figures (duplicated)
from the individual manuals and guides.

Added this file to the tools directory. It is used from the Makefile
when making the mega-manual. The file processes all the appropriate
<ulink> tags so that they are converted to <link> tags and the user
is not vectored off to an external HTML file.

Every place in the YP documentation suggests setting BB_NUMBER_THREADS
and PARALLEL_MAKE to twice the number of cores as the host machine.
This fixes a single instance in the YP dev manual where it was
suggested that PARELLEL_MAKE be set at 1.5x times the number of
cores.

Three things done to the Makefile:
1. Added logic so that the user can generate the mega-manual HTML
document. It includes processing links using mega-manual.sed
2. Added and updated the comments for 1.3 and inclusive of
mega-manual generation.
3. Added a test for the existance of HTML file in the publish
task. Previously you got some error that was geeky.

I fixed several occurences of cross-references to whole manuals where
the formatting was split in the <ulink> statement. The <ulink> tag
and the manual title must be on one DocBook line in order for the
sed scripts to correctly process the links when the mega-manual is
created.

Fixed several references to books. There should be no books referenced
using "The" at the beginning of the manual title. These need to be
"the" in order for correct mega-manual link processing with the
sed script.

the notes that say "Due to production processes..." at the start of
each manual contain links to manuals. the links needed to be formatted
such that the entire <ulink> code and manual name appeared on the same
line so that the sed script can effectively remove the link in the
resulting mega-manual.

I added new style.css names for the individual manuals.
Also, created a new entry for the mega-manual. This will generate
an HTML file only (similar to the QS). No PDF file will be generated.
The entry creates an appropriate mega-manual.tgz file as well and
can be branch-dependent (like the dev manual) since it will
obviously include the dev manual.

I had to rename individual style.css sheets to have book-specific
names. So style.css for the ADT manual becomes adt-style.css and
so forth. Turns out, this isn't really necessary for the solution
to create the mega-manual but I am leaving the changes as a
separate commit because it makes sense. It causes no disruption
to making the six YP manuals.

For some odd reason the PNG filename for the YP logo did not end
in "p". I added the character so that the image is displayed.

I changed a couple of id strings so that they are not duplicates.
I did this to eliminate a make error while experimenting with creation
of the single HTML YP document comprised of the individual docs.
Changing the id strings has no consequence on the individual Application
Developer's Guide and Kernel Manual.

Fixes [YOCTO #2929]
Provided an updated section on how to install and configure the
Eclipse IDE so that it supports both Juno 4.2 and Indigo 3.7.2.
The fix included creating a new poky.ent variable that is
Juno-specific.

With the decision to create a single HTML file that has all
individual YP manuals, the need for including the BSP guide as
part of the YP Reference Manual goes away. I have removed this
guide as a chapter, removed the mention of it in the introduction,
and fixed the two links in the FAQ chapter to reference the external
manual.

The detailed chapter that describes how to install and configure
the Eclipse Yocto Plug-in has been moved to become a subsection of
the "Workflow" chapter in the YP Development Manual. This commit
accomplished the bulk move, edits to integrate the information,
and fixes to all cross-references. Moving the chapter creates a
sectioning issue in the YP Development manual that results in
subsections that are six levels deep. Not ideal. Will look at
fixing these with a subsequent commit.

We should not use "latest" any longer for this variable. The
string is fine in URLs that might appear on a website but the actual
variable should be set to the release number. This way when we
go to release the version of the docs they do not have to be reset
with a post-release commit to change the variable from "lastest" to
"1.3".

The string used for the link anchor for the "What You Need and
How You Get It" section in the YP QS used "resources". This
string is actually used as the chapter id for the resources
chapter in the YP ref manual. I changed the string in the QS
from "resources" to "yp-resourses" to make it unique. There was
one instance in the YP ref manual where a cross-reference to the
section occurred. I fixed that as well.

Removing the Development chapter resulted in some links being
re-defined to go to the YP Development manual. Also, the
poky-ref-manual.xml file had to be altered to not include the
chapter. Any sort of residual cleanup needed as a result of
getting rid of this chapter is handled in this commit.

I did a scrub for the term "Yocto" and substituted appropriately.
This resulted in the term "Yocto Project build system" going away and
being replaced by "OpenEmbedded build system." The "Yocto Project
build directory" was replaced by "build directory." I also found a few
little things that were wrong like including the Debian distro in the
list of supported distros so I removed that. Finally, a spell check
produced a couple of fixes.
